Thermoplastic Road Marking Material Processing Protocol

Thermoplastic road marking materials typically consist of hydrocarbon resin, polyethylene wax (as additives), pigments, and mineral fillers blended into a powdered mixture. Hydrocarbon resin and polyethylene wax melt into a liquid state when heated to 180–220°C, ensuring optimal fluidity for application.

Thermoplastic Road Marking Materials in Action – High-quality, durable road marking paint being applied to a highway surface.

Standard Heating Procedure

Initial Heating

Ignite the gas burner of the melting kettle. Add 1–2 bags of material and initiate the stirring system once the temperature reaches ~150°C. Maintain continuous stirring; adjust stirring direction periodically to accelerate softening.

Note: If residual solidified material remains in the kettle, use low heat to avoid carbonization of the bottom layer due to excessive temperatures, which compromises whiteness.

Sequential Material Addition

When the temperature reaches 210°C and all material is fully liquefied, add 1–2 additional bags. Repeat this step (add material → wait for full liquefaction at 210°C) to minimize total heating time.

Critical Precautions

Avoid:

  • Adding large quantities of powdered material before prior batches are fully liquefied.
  • Using high heat to accelerate melting.

Rationale:

  • Powdered material has poor thermal conductivity, delaying melting even under intense heat.
  • Hydrocarbon resin begins decomposing and carbonizing at >250°C, leading to solidification.

Carbonization Risks and Mitigation

High heat + bulk material addition → Carbonized residues form on the kettle’s inner walls (resembling blackened "scales").

Consequences:

  • Partially carbonized residues dissolve into the liquid material, reducing whiteness.
  • Fully carbonized particles pass through the mesh filter, enter the applicator cart, and create streaks or scratches during line marking.
