Production Process

The production process of thermoplastic road marking paint involves several steps. First, raw materials such as C5 petroleum resin, polyethylene wax, ethylene, titanium dioxide, chromium yellow, glass beads, and calcium carbonate sand powder are prepared and mixed in precise ratios. The mixture is then heated in a hot-melt kettle to form a liquid. Afterward, the liquid is applied to the road surface through spraying, screeding, or extrusion, followed by cooling and solidification. Reflective glass beads are added for visibility. Finally, the paint undergoes quality control before being packaged in woven plastic bags.

Composition

Thermoplastic road marking paint combines C5 petroleum resin for brightness, polyethylene wax for weather resistance, and ethylene for crack and heat stability. Titanium dioxide ensures whiteness, chromium yellow enhances vivid yellow markings, while glass beads improve reflectivity. Calcium carbonate powder boosts strength and wear resistance, ensuring durability in various conditions.
Provides excellent retroreflective performance, improving the reflectivity of the markings.
Directly affects the whiteness of the paint. The higher the percentage, the higher the whiteness, making the markings brighter and whiter.
Improves brightness and drying time. The higher the percentage, the better the quality and the higher the price.

Construction Process

Step1:Surface Preparation
Before applying the thermoplastic road marking paint, the road surface must be clean and smooth. Workers use brooms or sweepers to remove dust, dirt, and any debris from the surface. If needed, high-pressure cleaning machines may be used to make sure the paint sticks well to the road.
Step2: Marking and Positioning
According to the road marking plan, workers use chalk or marking machines to draw guide lines on the road to show where the markings will go. This ensures the markings are aligned correctly and are the right size.
Step3: Heating the Paint
The thermoplastic paint comes in powder form and needs to be heated in a hot-melt kettle. It is heated to a temperature between 180°C and 220°C until it becomes a liquid. The paint is kept stirring during this process to prevent clumps from forming.
Step4: Applying the Paint
Once the paint is melted, it is applied to the road using a specialized road marking machine. This machine can spray or extrude the paint depending on the type of road marking needed. The paint is spread evenly and quickly to create consistent road lines.
Step5: Sprinkling Glass Beads
To improve the visibility of the road markings, small glass beads are sprinkled on the wet paint. These beads reflect light, making the lines more visible at night or in low light conditions.
Step6: Cooling and Solidifying
After applying the paint, it cools down and hardens quickly, usually within a few minutes. This quick solidifying process allows the road to be opened up for traffic without much delay.

Procurement Guide

Different countries have varying standards for thermoplastic road marking paints, leading to differences in composition and pricing. For example, the AASHTO M249 standard in the U.S. requires higher glass bead content compared to the BS3262 standard in the UK. Depending on the type of road project, such as highways, urban streets, or pedestrian crossings, different types of paint may be required to meet specific durability and visibility needs. At Bole, we provide both BS3262 and AASHTO M249 standards, and we can also customize thermoplastic road marking paints to suit various national specifications. Contact us today for tailored solutions that meet your project's requirements!

echnology and Innovation of Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint

Many countries are now pursuing photoluminescent road marking paints, which glow in the dark without the need for external power sources. These paints absorb light during the day and emit it at night, improving road visibility and safety in low-light conditions. We also offer photoluminescent thermoplastic paints as part of our product range, providing an innovative solution for enhanced night-time visibility and long-lasting performance, making roads safer for both drivers and pedestrians.

Road Marking Construction and Use Precautions

Road Surface Cleaning:

Before construction, ensure the road surface is thoroughly cleaned, free from dust, oil, water, and impurities to enhance the adhesion of the paint.

Construction Temperature Control:

Hot melt paint should be heated to 180°C-220°C; temperatures outside this range can affect the quality of the application. Use professional hot melt kettle equipment to monitor the temperature in real-time.

Road Surface Pretreatment:

For non-asphalt pavements such as concrete, it is recommended to apply a primer to improve adhesion and prevent peeling in the future.

Glass Beads Spreading:

To ensure reflective performance, the application of glass beads must be synchronized with the hot melt paint. Ensure uniform distribution, and the amount should meet standard provisions (usually 250-400 g/square meter).

Construction Safety:

The construction process should be carried out by trained professionals, using high-temperature protective equipment, and appropriate warning signs should be posted to prevent pedestrians and vehicles from entering the construction zone.
